Wearable tech designed for opioid monitoring used for COVID-19

A piece of wearable technology previously used to detect and prevent opioid overdoses has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use by hospital staff to monitor patients with COVID-19. The Masimo SafetyNet is worn like a wristwatch and constantly monitors the wearer’s pulse, breathing and blood oxygen levels. It will be used to monitor patients with ‘serious but manageable’ symptoms so that they can return home, thus freeing up hospital beds that are in increasingly short supply. The Masimo SafetyNet is currently being trialled in two New York hospitals.
