US city of San Francisco approves ‘forced treatment’

Officials in the city of San Francisco have approved a pilot scheme introducing conservatorship in which people can be forced to attend mental health or addiction treatment. The pilot will involve identifying people who have been involuntarily detained for psychiatric treatment eight or more times in the past year. Those identified people will then be appointed a public conservator who will oversee their treatment for up to one year.
