Sustainability funds from Zimbabwe’s tobacco tax unspent since 2015

Revenue from a tobacco tax designed to raise money to improve the sustainability of tobacco production in Zimbabwe has not been spent, with delays attributed to administrative problems. The fund was designed to help the Zimbabwe tobacco industry meet 2020 Global Tobacco Cigarette Companies Guidelines on sustainable production. Accordingly, programmes for tobacco farmers to extend forest regions and to establish woodlots should already be underway, but farmers claim that they are unable to start due to a lack of financial support.
