Smoking harms cost £17 billion in England each year

An economic analysis commissioned by charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has estimated that smoking costs society around £17 billion each year. The figure is much higher than the previous estimate of £12 billion per year. ASH argues that the government’s delayed tobacco control plan needs to be implemented if the country is to become smoke-free by 2030.
