Scotland has UK’s highest alcohol death rate

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has reported that Scotland’s alcohol death rate has risen for the second consecutive year. In 2020, 21.5 deaths in Scotland per 100,000 were caused by alcohol, an increase from 18.6 per 100,000 in 2019. Scotland’s alcohol death rate is the highest in the four UK nations. The ONS also reported that alcohol-related deaths in Northern Ireland reached a 20-year record high. In 2020, there were 19.6 deaths per 100,000, increasing from 336 overall deaths in 2019 to 351 in 2020.
