Poppy cultivation down, but opium production increases in Afghanistan

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) reports that poppy cultivation in Afghanistan reduced by 28% between 2018 and 2019; however, overall opium production increased by 21% from 5,550 to 6,700 metric tonnes over the same period. Increased overall production was attributed to good weather and harvesting conditions.
