Police in Scotland to issue warnings for low-level drug possession offences

People found in possession of illicit drugs in Scotland could now be issued with a Recorded Police Warning, rather than being referred for prosecution. The warnings have previously been used for Class B and C drugs in Scotland; however, the new measures mean that people caught with class A drugs might now avoid prosecution. Police officers will be given the power to decide whether to prosecute or to issue a warning.
