Online gambling up by 67% in Australia during COVID-19 lock-down

There was a 67% increase in online gambling in Australia in the week ending 9 April 2020 compared with an average week. Alcohol and tobacco sales also increased by around 33% from the average. The increase in online gambling appears to have been predominantly among people who would otherwise have used poker machines but who can no longer access them due to COVID-19 prevention measures. There has also been an increase in non-sport gambling (such as betting on changes in interest rates) as sporting events worldwide are cancelled.
