New York state to issue fines instead of prison sentences for cannabis

The US state of New York has amended current legislation so that people found in possession of small amounts of cannabis will be issued a fine instead of facing criminal charges. Those found in possession of less than 28g of cannabis will be fined $50, rising to $200 for those found with between 28 and 56g. The new legislation also outlines a process for pardoning historical criminal convictions for for cannabis possession.
