Mexico clears former defence minister of drug charges

The Mexican Attorney General’s office has announced that it will not pursue drug trafficking charges made against General Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda by US prosecutors. Cienfuegos was arrested in the US in 2020 and accused of drug trafficking, money laundering and protecting drug trafficking cartels. The US then dropped the charges, sending Cienfuegos to Mexico to be investigated because of ‘important foreign policy’ considerations. Mexican prosecutors claim to have evidence that Cienfuegos had no encounters with criminal organisations.
