Malaysia removes mandatory death sentence for drug trafficking

The Prime Minister of Malaysia has announced that judges will now be given the authority to choose between imposing the death penalty and imposing a prison term of not less than 10 years in drug trafficking cases. The legislative change will be achieved by removing the word ‘mandatory’ where drug-trafficking sentencing guidelines refer to capital punishment.
