Japan bans smoking in government buildings

Japan has introduced new legislation to ban smoking in government premises. The ban will apply to schools, hospital facilities and child-welfare establishments. The law is due to be extended in early 2020 to cover eating and drinking premises, offices, railway buildings and hotel lobbies. Smokers will be allowed to smoke in designated smoking areas where provided; however, the Health Ministry has deterred organisations from providing such areas.
