Hungary referred to European high court over cigarette taxes

The European Commission has referred Hungary to the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) for failure to implement minimum taxation on tobacco products. EU rules stipulate that excise duty must constitute a minimum of 60% of the applicable weighted average retail price of cigarettes and no less than EUR90 per 1,000 cigarettes. Hungary has raised cigarette taxes three times since September 2018 but has not yet met the minimum standard.
