Global cocaine production at record levels

The annual report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) found that cocaine production reached record high levels in 2018. The report attributes much of the increase to changes in production in Columbia which reportedly produces 70% of the world’s cocaine. Cocaine cultivation in Columbia has moved to more rural areas after peace deals with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia People’s Army (FARC) rebels have allowed criminal gangs to enter areas of Columbia that were previously inaccessible due to rebel fighting and FARC control.
