EU bans menthol tobacco products

Sales of menthol tobacco products are now banned in the European Union (EU) as new anti-smoking laws came into effect on 20 May 2020. The ban was introduced under the revision of the European Union’s Tobacco Products Directive and covers the production and sale of menthol cigarettes and tobacco-related products, including filters, paper, capsules and dual menthol cigarettes. The ban was introduced to deter young people from smoking and to counter beliefs that menthol cigarettes are less harmful than regular tobacco products.
