Drug-related deaths in England and Wales reach record high

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has reported that in 2019 it recorded the highest number of drug-poisoning deaths in England and Wales since records began in 1993. In 2019, 4,393 drug-poisoning deaths were reported, compared with 4,359 in 2018. Of the total number of drug poisoning deaths, 2,883 were related to drug use. The ONS data also showed that the increase in cocaine-related deaths between 2018 and 2019 was higher among women than men, with an increase of 7.7% in cocaine-related deaths among men compared with a 26.5% increase among women.
