Denver ‘de-felonizes’ single use drug possession

A law in Denver will stop felony charges from being applied to possession of Schedule I and II drugs. The change is due to be implemented in 2020 and will apply to people found in possession of small amounts of illicit drugs such as heroin, cocaine and fentanyl. Such offences will be treated as ‘misdemeanours’. The Joint Budget Committee estimated that the new approach will save between $8.6m and $13.7m over five years, to be used to fund new addiction treatment centres.
