California ends minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offences

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has approved a law that will end mandatory minimum sentences for people convicted of nonviolent drug-related crimes. From January 2022, judges will be allowed to issue a probationary order instead of a prison sentence for offences such as possessing small amounts of illicit drugs.
