British American Tobacco asks for higher cigarette taxes in Japan

British American Tobacco (BAT) has urged Japan’s government to raise tax on cigarettes as part of its fiscal 2022 tax system reform. The request follows an announcement that Japan plans to raise taxes for heat-not-burn products and not for cigarettes. The tobacco company stated that it is concerned that the proposed tax change would deter smokers from switching to less harmful alternatives.
