Alcohol related deaths in England reach 20 year high

The UK Office for National Statistics has reported that deaths that are directly attributed to alcohol were 20% higher in 2020 compared with 2019. There has been a long-term trend of increased alcohol related deaths over the past 10 years; however, the recent report attributes this latest rise to high levels of alcohol consumption among high risk drinkers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Four in five alcohol attributable deaths in 2020 were from alcoholic liver disease, one in ten from mental and behavioural disorders and one in 20 from accidental alcohol poisoning.
